About Grand Orient Restaurant

Set inside The Melbourne Hotel on Milligan Street, this heritage dining room delivers serious Cantonese banquet craft with old-school polish. Regulars book tables for the duck service alone—carved tableside and rolled into thin pancakes right beside your seat. The multi-course menus keep pace without filler. Double-boiled chicken and baby abalone broth. Steamed coral trout. Scallop and prawn fried rice carrying a clean dose of wok hei. Midday crowds shift focus to high tea, replacing traditional scones with soft-shell crab bao and ginger martinis. The room hums at breakneck speed during weekend dinners, settling only when generous platters of lobster yee fu noodles hit the table.

  • Tableside Peking Duck: Whole roast duck carved tableside and folded into warm pancakes directly beside your seat.
  • Heritage Banquet Feasts: Grand multi-course feasts with baby abalone broth, steamed coral trout, and lobster yee fu noodles.
  • Chinese-Inspired High Tea: Afternoon service pairing savoury bites like soft-shell crab bao with bespoke cocktails.

Why Diners Choose Grand Orient Restaurant

Refined Cantonese banquet traditions, tableside culinary theatre, and distinctive afternoon high teas in Perth’s heritage Melbourne Hotel.

  • Tableside Peking Duck Carving

Whole roasted Peking duck is carved directly beside the dining table with surgical precision, offering guests an engaging visual performance as thin pancakes are folded with crispy skin and fragrant garnish.

Watching the duck carved tableside, slicing each piece with practiced precision right next to the table, turns dining into something of an event. It's food theatre in the best way.

  • Mahjong-Themed Savoury High Tea

Afternoon tea diverges from British tradition with a thematic mahjong-inspired progression, pairing dim-sum-style savoury creations like spun potato prawn and duck pate toast with bespoke cocktails like the Ginger Martini.

Rather than simply using mahjong as decoration, every course represents another chapter of a game. It genuinely reminded me of the atmosphere I imagine around my parents' generation playing mahjong.

  • Refined Grand Set Banquets

Grand banquet menus spotlight traditional high-end Cantonese culinary craftsmanship, presenting multi-course feasts complete with double-boiled chicken and baby abalone broth alongside rich lobster yee fu noodles.

The double-boiled chicken and baby abalone broth was delicate and comforting, the lobster yee fu noodles were outrageously good, and the coral trout was cooked perfectly

  • Crispy Duck & Abalone Soup

The kitchen delivers crisp-skinned duck rolled in delicate, paper-thin pancakes, complemented by slow-simmered abalone soups and wok-fried specialties.

pancakes were light and thin, duck skin was crispy and packed full of flavour. Chicken and abalone soup was rich and flavourful.

  • Polished Milestone Event Coordination

Dedicated coordinators manage large celebratory banquets with months of proactive support, seamlessly adjusting table layouts, handling last-minute party adjustments, and pacing courses across the evening.

We recently celebrated a family member's milestone birthday at the Grand Orient, which was an event that took many months to plan and organise. From the beginning, we were impressed by the staff's professionalism and promptness in responding to queries

  • Dedicated Birthday & Occasion Celebrations

The stately dining room provides an elegant backdrop for recurring family milestones and milestone birthdays, pairing attentive service with balanced Cantonese delicacies and desserts.

A must to celebrate one's birthday (which I do every year) and special occasions. The dishes and desserts are served perfectly - perfect taste (not sickly sweet or salty but just incredibly right), perfect texture, and perfect presentation by professsional and attentive staff in a beautiful setting.

Matcha latte was also a nice drink option as I haven’t been to a high tea in Perth that offered it with the high tea menu.

  • Plan Ahead for CBD Parking

Street parking in the Perth city centre can be challenging; plan on using nearby commercial parking facilities such as the close by CPP car park.

  • Chinese-Inspired High Tea Menu

Afternoon tea departs from British conventions: expect Chinese-inspired savouries, bao, and cocktail or mocktail pairings rather than standard scones and finger sandwiches.

  • Fast Service & Course Pacing

Dishes can arrive rapidly from the kitchen during peak dining hours, so pace your orders or notify floor staff if you want a more relaxed, lingering meal.
