What child restraint should I arrange for a car trip in Perth?

We will hire a vehicle while visiting Western Australia with children. I have found an old forum post about child seats and want to know what to check now.

If you plan to use a taxi, bus or other passenger vehicle, check the separate Transport WA rules and ask the operator what restraint can be provided. Do not assume the rental-car rule or a forum anecdote describes every vehicle type.

Confirm the exact restraint with the rental company before paying: child age, fit, vehicle compatibility and who will install it. A seat listed as an optional extra is only useful if the provider can actually supply a suitable one for your booking.

Western Australia requires a suitable child restraint for children under seven, with the required type depending on age and size. Check the current Road Safety Commission and Transport WA guidance for each child rather than using a 2010 forum summary.
