If Rottnest is a priority, check the ferry departure points and sailing times before deciding on accommodation. Build the day around the ferry you can actually book; your preferred beach, cafe or city itinerary can then guide the remaining nights.

A Perth base does not rule out Fremantle: check the current Fremantle Line timetable for a day trip. If you stay in Fremantle, the same rail connection makes a Perth city day straightforward, but allow for the travel at each end of the train ride.

Choose Perth if most of your days focus on the CBD, cultural venues and trips that begin there. Choose Fremantle if its streets, markets, dining and nearby coast are the main draw. Compare actual accommodation prices for your dates rather than assuming either area is always cheaper.
